Poll on Leonel’s first two months

A survey on President Leonel Fernandez’s performance during the first two months of his government was carried out by the Global Strategy Group, the polling company hired by the President’s Partido de la Liberacion Dominicana (PLD). It revealed that 91% of those surveyed approve of the measures introduced by the new government. The results were given by the Secretary of the Presidency, Danilo Medina, during a meeting of PLD members on 13 October. Global Strategy Group conducted polls for the PLD during the 1996 election campaign, predicting victories for Mr. Fernandez in the first and second rounds of the election. They were wrong the first time and right the second.

During the two day meeting of the PLD, party members again expressed their disappointment about not sharing the “spoils” of the electoral victory by being given jobs in government. The Secretary General of PLD, Lidio Cadet, explained that in addition to the desire of the government to have qualified personnel that would not necessarily be found in the party ranks, the fact that the ruling party had to make a pact with former President Balaguer’s Partido Reformista Social Cristiano (PRSC) makes it more difficult to “clean house” and fill positions with PLD members.
