Refuse collection continues to be a problem

As refuse continues to pile up in many areas of the National District, city councilmen have accused the Mayor of Santo Domingo, Rafael Subervi Bonilla, of negotiating with Dixi Sanitary Services without their knowledge or input. Three councilmen told the newspaper Hoy that they favor a cancellation of the contract between the government and Dixi Sanitary Service, whose subsidiary Attwoods Dominicana has allegedly not provided a satisfactory service to the capital since the arrangement started in 1992.

Rafael Subervi has been authorized by the central government to negotiate with the company in order to improve the collection service, which both Mr. Subervi and his predecessor Rafael Corporán de los Santos have harshly criticized. Responding to the comments of the councilmen, the Mayor said that when discussions with representatives of Dixi are completed and the terms outlined, the council (Sala Capitular) will vote on a final decision as to whether to continue or rescind the contract.
