President Leonel Fernandez, dressed in jeans and sport shirt, made a half an hour visit to La Cienaga, one of the poorest areas in the city of Santo Domingo. The President said that the government is committed to improving the living standard of all Dominicans. “This is the government of the poor for the poor,” he stated. He visited La Cienaga accompanied by secretary of the presidency, Danilo Medina, administrative secretary of the presidency, Diandino Peña, and architect Mercedes Sabater de Macarrulla, among other key officers in his government. The President has been making several short and unannounced trips to problem areas in the city. Earlier in the week, after attending a wedding, he visited Las Cañitas, another slum area, at midnight.
