Drug testing at state university

Mandatory drug testing will be introduced at the Santo Domingo Autonomous University (UASD) beginning next week. University president, Miguel Rosado told press that the tests would be administered to students, professor and staff on the basis of a "determined profile’ of behavior that characterizes the drug user. The first to be tested would be the members of the university council the governing body "beginning with me," said Rosado. The cost of testing for those already enrolled or employed will be borne by the university, while new enrollees and hires would be required to pay the RD$300 (around US$18.50) cost out of their own pockets. Complaints of drug trafficking on the UASD campus have surfaced recently. The UASD is the country’s only publicly supported university and enrolls over 110,000 students.
