6.5 cars stolen per day in DR

Listin Diario reports that 6.5 cars are stolen per day in the DR. From January to May 2000, 974 car robberies were reported to the National Police. Colonel Mariano Made Ramirez, who is in charge of the Departamento de Recuperacion de Vehiculos, says that of these 605 vehicles were returned to the owners. He recommended those parking their cards to never leave the keys in the cars, always lock the doors and pay an "attendant" when parking in a low transited area. He said that if the car will be left for a long while in an insecure area, car cables should be removed to make it difficult for the car to be started.
