Balaguer believes Germán should stay in

Former President Joaquin Balaguer believes that Mariano German Mejia should continue as the president of the Dominican Telecommunications Institute (INDOTEL). This organization regulates radio, television, telephone and other telecommunications sectors. President-elect Hipólito Mejía opposes the appointment of Mariano Germán on grounds that it was unethical for President Fernandez to appoint a new director when only 2-1/2 months were left to his presidency. Mejía has said he will sack Germán on the first day of his presidency. This would be in violation to the Indotel charter law that establishes the president of Indotel should last four years. The executive director of Indotel, Francisco Frías recently resigned the position reportedly due to differences with the new president of the institute.
