Nephew of Freddy Beras Goico shot by supposed assailant

33-year old lawyer Octavio Beras, son and nephew, respectively, of TV producers Tutín and Freddy Beras Goico died yesterday in a shoot out with supposed assailants. The killing occurred around noon in front of the St. George School on Abraham Lincoln Ave, where his oldest daughter, a six year old, studies. News reports say that it is most likely that the two men had followed Beras from a bank from where he had taken out RD$199,000. One of the supposed assailants, 24-year old Manuel Jiménez, died when Beras defended himself with a gun he bore. Jiménez resided in Capotillo, one of the city’s "hot" neighborhoods. His father told the Police the Police during raids in the neighborhood had arrested him on three occasions. The other supposed assailant escaped on a white Yamaha motorcycle DT 125, which witnesses said bore an official license plate. Beras was the credit and collections manager at Cartonera Hernández. He was married to Cecilia Justiniano and had three children. The incident was the talk of the day yesterday, with editorialists and commentators calling out for more efforts to curb delinquency. Freddy Beras Goico, uncle of the deceased, criticized the human rights activists that he said take money to defend the rights of delinquents and drug traffickers. He said that he only wished that they never had to suffer the death of a son or nephew at the hand of a delinquent because then they would be in a very difficult position. "We support the actions of the Police against delinquency, and it is necessary that more citizens integrate also, stop being passive and actively integrate to the actions being taken to fight delinquency," he said. He urged that the Police be better equipped to combat the new delinquents.
