Census set for end 2001

The Eighth National Population and Home Census will be carried out at the end of 2001, announced Rafael Calderón, Technical Secretary of the Presidency. He said the government estimates the 2001 Census will cost around RD$217 million. The previous census was carried out in 1993, but statisticians say the results were not satisfactory or trustworthy. The 2001 Census has the support of the United Nations. Calderón said the 2001 Census is a historic opportunity to start off the new millennium with accurate data on Dominican population, households from a national, regional, municipal levels. He said the census is an essential instrument to formulate adequate social and economic policy. The announcement was made at the National Statistics Office. Present were UN staff and the director of the ONE, Luis Hernández.
