Not everyone shares the opinion of the president of the Senate, Andres Bautista Garcia, who justifies the presence of US troops in the Dominican Republic. The president of the Chamber of Deputies, Rafaela Alburquerque (Lila), said she was absolutely against their being here, ?even if they take my visa away.? Bautista Garcia said that there was no issue of national sovereignty at hand, adding that the US servicemen are merely military advisors and technicians. Baustista Garcia added that if this were an invasion, it would be an old one, since military technicians and advisors have been operating in the Dominican Republic for years. ?We all remember the schools and bridges these people built after Hurricane Georges, and before then?there were [also] advisors here.? Alburquerque, speaking as a civil citizen, and not in her capacity as president of the Chamber of Deputies, said that she did not want any Marines here, and that if in Puerto Rico they were removed, why did they have to come here?
