Political scientists Flavio Dar?o Espinal and Pedro Catrain feel that any step towards re-election means a burial of the democratic line within the PRD structure. Catrain, a professor at the Universidad Aut?noma de Santo Domingo (UASD), said that by vying for a second term, Mej?a would cause ?division? within the party. Espinal, the head of the School of Law at the Pontificia Universidad Cat?lica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM) in Santo Domingo and former OAS ambassador, feels that Mej?a?s statements will create internal pressure within the PRD ? a party that has, in the past, opposed presidential re-election.
