In a story carried by the Diario Libre and echoed in the List?n Diario, the ambassador for the European Union has gone to bat for one of its own. Ambassador Miguel Amado called the government ?irresponsible? for not honoring contracts signed with foreign investors for public services and cited the case of the Spanish firm Urbaser, which has a contract for garbage collection in Santo Domingo. Amado said that the contract was violated by the lack of payments made. According to the ambassador, ?there are problems in getting the government to understand the rules that apply to investments in this country. We have accords that are not being fulfilled and others that need to be revised.?
