Dengue still around

The National Dengue Commission has released statistics on current levels of the disease in the Dominican Republic. So far, in 2003 there have been 2000 cases reported, with 23 deaths attributed to the fever. The areas of San Crist?bal, San Jos? de Ocoa, Moca, Barahona, La Vega, Salcedo and Santo Domingo province are the areas of the highest dengue concentration, says the commission?s report, and that most cases are reported during the months of August and September. While the commission does suffer from severe economic restraints, the basic remedy suggested is to eliminate all sources of mosquito reproduction. Increased rains in the agricultural provinces, as well a heightened awareness of the illness, are the prime motives for the large increase in reported cases over last year, when at this time only 593 cases had been reported.
