AMET fires 22 officers

General Luis Oleaga, the director of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (AMET), told reporter Llennis Jimenez of Hoy that he has dismissed 22 agents for mistreatment of drivers. Another eight agents received lesser punishments. Oleaga, a career official, told the reporter it was not true that drivers were being held for as long as three days for simple traffic violations. The general also denied that detainees were being subjected to various abuses during their detainment, such as being doused with water, as the lawyer Miguel Angel Mendez Rodriguez described to the press. Oleaga told the reporter that if Mendez was held for two days, it was not for a simple traffic infraction.
