No record turnout this election

Diario Libre reports that if the voter count trend continues in the tabulation of the ballots, Sunday?s election could be that with the lowest turnout of the past three Presidential elections. Using the numbers offered yesterday, one could project that an estimated 3,626,154 Dominicans voted, while 5,020,703 were registered. This would signal that 1.4 million Dominicans chose not to vote and would account for a 27.8% rate of abstention. In 2000, the abstention rate was 23.86%, when about 1 million voters did not cast a ballot. In the previous election of 1996, 21.9% did not vote in the first round, while 23.52% abstained in the second round. Notably, many PRD members chose not to vote in this election, as they were not happy with the PRD government but not willing to vote for any other candidate.
