Preventing further tragedy in Jimani

The recent deaths of two people from tetanus have caused anxiety and more pain to the areas around Jimani. In spite of the best efforts of many NGOs to distribute vaccines, potable water, hygiene products and clean living quarters, Father Jose Ramon de la Cruz, the parish priest for Jimani, told reporters that any lapse in hygiene could cause death in the devastated region. In spite of the war on disease and the 21,000 doses of vaccine that were administered, the two deaths occurred regardless. To confirm the validity of the tetanus diagnosis, epidemiologist Dr Manuel Abreu went to Santo Domingo to study the case. Francisco Moquete, the director of the hospital in Jimani, said that when the 24 May tragedy occurred, his hospital only had 10 doses of tetanus vaccine, and he added that Jimani had gone years without seeing a single case of the disease. In Saturday?s Hoy newspaper, reporter German Marte wrote about the work that Oxfam has been doing in Jimani. The focus of the Oxfam effort was the health of the survivors, to whom they distributed 16,000 gallons of drinking water and 1,000 packages of survival food sufficient for three days, and built 200 latrines. Public showers, washbasins and hundreds of trash receptacles were also distributed, along with hygiene programs for the 4,000 people housed in government facilities there. Other NGOs are working on a map of danger areas for the future and the development of food sources in sustainable agriculture to supply the area after the assistance groups leave the area.
