Leftist government?

Foreign Relations Minister Carlos Morales Troncoso has reacted to Otto Reich’s description of the DR as a leftist country.

He said the statement was unfortunate and not representative of the U.S. government’s official position. He told Listin Diario that there are still people that see leftism “even in their soup”.

Hoy newspaper quotes Morales calling the statement rubbish and behind the times. Morales said that definitions of left and right have disappeared as a result of globalization. He said that the former deputy secretary of state is using 25 or 30-year old political rhetoric.

Known internationally as an anti-Castro fanatic, Reich was appointed assistant secretary of state for hemispheric affairs by President Bush but never confirmed by the US Congress.

Reich had said that the US needs to break up the Cuban-Venezuela axis because it endangers the stability of the region at a time when leftist governments like that of the Dominican Republic are coming to power.
