In Puerto La Cruz, Venezuela, Dominican President Leonel Fernandez said that Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez’ proposal to assist the DR with its energy woes was an “act of extreme generosity, most typical of his (Chavez’) personality.” The Dominican President arrived at this eastern city in Venezuela yesterday afternoon. Puerto La Cruz is located 319 kilometers to the east of Caracas. President Fernandez will participate in the First Energy Summit of Heads of State or Government. Fidel Castro is the only leader who will not be taking part in the summit. According to the Venezuelan government, the summit aims to launch Petrocaribe, an energy company that will attempt to protect the poorer Caribbean nations from the ever-higher oil prices. Fernandez was met at the airport by President Chavez who expressed his worries that some Caribbean nations could have difficulties to meet their energy needs in the future.
