Census of foreigners

During a meeting of the National Immigration Council (CNM) yesterday, the authorities agreed to carry out a census to establish the number of foreigners living in the DR and to regularize the status of those residing here illegally. The CNM is composed of 11 government departments. The census aims to establish the family relations, social and productive activities of the foreigners who live in the DR. Specialized technicians will be hired to carry out the census, which will include all foreigners. Interior & Police Minister Franklin Almeyda Rancier, who heads the CNM, stated that the department wants the census performed as soon as possible. He explained that this is a measure for the application of Article 153 of the Immigration Law that regulates foreigners on Dominican territory. A migratory policy will be defined at the same time and the expulsion of illegal Haitians will continue, though not on a large scale and always respecting their human rights. The CNM also expressed concern about the border situation and formed a commission to gather data on the frontier, and to make proposals and suggestions to President Leonel Fernandez. Almeyda Rancier, Armed Forces Minister Sigfrido Pared Perez, Foreign Relations Minister Carlos Morales Troncoso, Public Health Minister Sabino Baez, Labor Minister Ramon Fadul, Public Works Minister Freddy Perez, and Agriculture Minister Amilcar Romero make up the commission.
