European Union: DR is not a failed state

The European Union ambassador in the DR, Dino Sinigallia, has rejected the idea that the Dominican Republic is a failed or failing state as was reported by a publication out of Washington, D.C. In his comments, made yesterday, the ambassador said that the reality was different, since on 16 May, 2004, the nation gave a clear sign of institutionalism and civic pride as it went to the voting booths in clean and transparent presidential elections.

Speaking at the inauguration of the new Dr. Defillo Laboratories that will perform drug quality testing, and which were constructed with European Community funding, the ambassador said that President Fernandez is handling a reform process that appears to be successful within the framework of the IMF letter of intent. Not all was praiseworthy according to the ambassador; “there are still difficulties and deficiencies, but who does not have some of these?” But Sinigallia ended by saying: “Is this a state at risk? Of course not!”
