More on energy

The Executive Director of the Electric Sector Recovery Committee, created to direct the state’s electric policy, recommended that President Leonel Fernandez authorize the contract for the installation of two coal-fired generators in a rush to complete the deal with Westmont. The resolution with the recommendation was signed by the Energy Commission director, Ruben Montas, the manager of the state-owned electric corporation CDEEE, Radhames Segura, the Superintendent of Electricity, Francisco Mendez and Executive Branch Energy Advisor Eduardo Rodriguez, last 24 June as reported in Diario Libre. Local electricity sectors have questioned the deal, saying it lacks transparency and could be a repeat of the Cogentrix deal signed during the previous Fernandez administration.

Diario Libre also reports that a prominent sheikh from the United Arab Emirates has expressed an interest in investing US$2 billion in energy infrastructure in the DR and that he plans to send a delegation later this month with the intention of meeting President Fernandez.
