Attorney General Francisco Dominguez Brito issued orders sending former billionaire banker Leonel Almonte to Najayo Prison in San Cristobal, to be held there pending court appearances in San Juan de la Maguana where he is on trial for banking fraud. The former playboy and banker had been declared a fugitive from justice by the magistrate of the court in San Juan de la Maguana when he failed to appear in court. The Police could not locate Almonte for four days, until late Monday evening when he turned himself in to the Justice Department. The case has to do with the collapse of Banco Universal and the disappearance of millions of pesos. According to the El Caribe, Dominguez Brito said that Almonte will stay in the Najayo Prison since it is easier to transfer him to his court appearances from there.
