Insulza: campaigns must be regulated

Organization of American States (OAS) Secretary General Jose Miguel Insulza has spoken of the need for Latin American countries to establish mechanisms for regulating the funding of political campaigns and parties. According to a report in Diario Libre, Insulza delivered a lecture about parliamentary reform at the National Congress, during which he asked political parties and their representatives to work in favor of the electors and not for personal benefit. “There is no democracy without parties, but there are no parties if there are not effective results for the citizens”, said Insulza, who is the former Interior Minister of Chile. Insulza later met with President Fernandez at the Presidential Palace.

Insulza is visiting for the Organization of American States Model Session of the General Assembly of the OAS.
