International Women’s Day

Today is International Women’s Day. Expect lots of talk by politicians who hope to convince voters into the May congressional and municipal elections.

Today is a day to remember that even when women continue to suffer discriminations and the numbers of female homicides continues high (female murders nevertheless were down last year 32% last year), women also continue to brave the role of motherhood, are single heads of households and are an important part of the country’s labor force. Women are also 61% of the nation’s university students and a majority of the overall population.

President Leonel Fernandez and the Ministry of Women, represented by Minister Alejandrina German, will award the “2010 Women’s Medal of the Year”in a ceremony at the Presidential Palace.
