Basketball sports tourism event

Teams from the Caribbean and Central America are coming for the Centrobasket Championship to be staged at the Palacio de los Deportes Virgilio Travieso Soto from 5 to 11 July in Santo Domingo.

A record 10 national teams will be participating:

British Virgin Islands, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Puerto Rico, Trinidad & Tobago, and the United States Virgin Islands. Belize or Costa Rica may also play.

The Dominican Republic was officially approved last week as the host of the championship that is the qualifier for the Central American & Caribbean region for the 2011 FIBA Americas Championship (Pre-Olympic). The DR chose to host the event for another chance at making it to the Olympics.

The Palacio de los Deportes Virgilio Travieso Soto previously hosted the 2005 FIBA Americas Championship.

The top four teams from the Championship shall qualify for the 2011 FIBA Americas Championship (Pre-Olympic), the top eight for the 2010 CAC Games in Mayagez, Puerto Rico, and the top three for the 2011 Pan American Games scheduled for Guadalajara, Mexico.
