The mining company Falcondo Xstrata Nickel says it needs 15-20 days to move the naphtha fuel tanks located in Quita Sueno, Haina. Local residents have complained that people are becoming ill due to what they say are toxic emissions from the fuel that is stored in unsuitable tanks. The company has offered to hire the services of a company to suggest alternatives for controlling the fumes in the long term.
City councilor Rosario Altagracia Camacho says that the townspeople want the fuel tanks to be relocated. “There cannot be any deal, as a resident of the town and councilmember what we want is for them to take that out of here and leave. With the people’s help there can be no negotiating. They think we are lab rats, today they poison us and then tomorrow they inject us to see if we feel better, and no, I don’t believe in them,” she said as reported in Hoy.
Falcondo is seeking a new mining concession in Loma Miranda, in La Vega, and residents there also oppose the application on the grounds of future pollution.
Yesterday, Thursday 11 April, Falcondo employees were cooling the tanks with water in an attempt to lower the inside temperature and reduce the fumes.
