Free phone calls for convicts

The Consul General of the Dominican Republic in New York, Felix Antonio Martinez, has announced an improvement in the free telephone call service so that Dominicans who are serving sentences in US jails may call their families, lawyers, friends and relations. Martinez said that they are extending the hours of the free phone service as part of a program to provide efficient services to the Dominican community, mainly in the states of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Inmates can call the consulate on (212) 768-2480 from any jail in the United States and will be connected free of charge to their families in the USA, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Venezuela and other parts of the world.

Consul Martinez said that it would save the inmates money on phone calls, which at the moment can cost between US$22 and US$25 for five minutes, depending where they are calling.
