Presidency to fund trauma hospital renovations

Following a surprise visit yesterday, Thursday 2 May to the Dario Contreras Trauma Hospital in Santo Domingo, the country’s largest, President Danilo Medina announced that funds would be made available for the hospital to improve the quality of services. The works at the Dario Contreras Hospital will be managed by the Supervisory Office of Public Works of the Presidency (OISOE).

President Medina toured the hospital for half an hour and was able to see that 20 patients were hospitalized in a single ward with only one bathroom.

“The government cannot be indifferent. I have spoken with the Public Health Minister and we have plans to start working on 36 hospitals this year. He is making improvements at 16 hospitals, and there are 20 that still need to be renovated, but he is working on that.” Medina announced that OISOE would provide the funds that the Dario Contreras center needs to stretch the Ministry of Public Health’s budget.
