General strike called for Nagua

The Popular Front (Falpo), Rebellious Youth and the Committee for the Construction of Neighborhood Roads have called a 48-hour strike from today, Tuesday 11 June at 6am, in demand of several important works in the municipalities of Nagua and El Factor.

Campaigners Leocadio Garcia, Benny Fernandez, Edwin Cleto, Domingo Silvestre and Leonardo de Jesus say that the commercial sector, transport and other social organizations have all agreed to support the strike and close, or not provide transport services during the strike.

Their demands include the construction of 85 kilometers of local roads, not to evict at least 200 informal vendors from the Nagua – Sanchez road who have been there for more than 40 years, the building of a new public hospital and a better electricity service.

They are accusing the provincial governor Francisco Jose Pena of not listening to them, and not wanting to solve these problems, and they have warned that supposedly government linked sectors are being organized to come out onto the streets to disrupt public order so they suggest the public stay at home to avoid trouble.
