Musicians protest construction in city park

To the tune of Beethoven’s Turkish March and Nostalgia by Rosana B. Bustamante and directed by Maestro Dante Cucurullo, the members of the Juan Pablo Duarte Symphonic Orchestra protested the use of green area in Santo Domingo’s National Conservatory Park for building new parking area by playing a concert named “Alborada.” The City Government has converted the park area into the Hispano-American Park and there were major protests after builders cut down shade trees to build concrete walkways and now have plans to build large parking areas also at the expense of green areas. Dozens of young musicians protested by playing their violins, flutes, trumpets and cellos outside the National Music Conservatory on Sunday, 4 August. “We do not want to call it a protest. It is making music for the environment. What we are doing is inviting Dominican families to be close to the institution and to the nature that surrounds us,” said Conservatory director, Maria Irene Blanco.
