President Danilo Medina was in Salcedo yesterday, Thursday 8 August visiting the Dr. Miguel Canela Lazaro Science High School. He listened to students at the center where around 200 of the top students from the northeastern Hermanas Mirabal province are studying. President Medina instructed Minister of Education Carlos Amarante Baret and Administrative Minister Jose Ramon Peralta to start work on construction of new facilities for the school. Minister of Sports Jaime David Fernandez Mirabal, who comes from Salcedo, also spoke about the work being done on improvements to the school. Senators Luis Rene Canaan, Amilcar Romero and Aristides Victoria were also present.
Two students, Rosa Linares, 13 and Oliver Vega, 14 guided the President on the tour of the school.
Shortly after the President inaugurated 224 housing units in the northeastern provinces, including 80 in Villa Tapia (Hermanas Mirabal province), 80 in Pimentel (Duarte province) and 64 in Rio San Juan (Maria Trinidad Sanchez province). The developments are part of the Urban Development and Habitat Program (Invi-Villa Progreso) built at a cost of RD$240.5 million funds from the Dominican government and the Andean Development Corporation (CAF).
At the housing unit event, the President announced the start of construction of 800 new dwellings in 11 projects in Elias Pina, Salcedo, San Juan de la Maguana, Santo Domingo, Bahoruco, Valverde, Mao, Dajabon, and several other locations, due for completion by January 2014.
