“Sold”: a sordid story of human trafficking

The history of human trafficking is long and ugly. Spanning back over the last millennium, history recounts how Arab slavers trafficked captives from any nation, and the story today is not a whole lot different, according to a front-page story in Diario Libre. A baseline study conducted in 2009 and never published shows just what a role this sort of human trafficking plays in the Dominican Republic. The DR is known as one of the main suppliers of women throughout the Caribbean and the Americas as well as Europe. The article reveals how recruiters and brothel owners mistreat, trick and abuse the women, using force, psychological terror tactics and their victims’ own ignorance and poverty to their advantage. “Contracts” written in foreign languages, horrid conditions and misleading ads in classified sections are part of the scams. While the Dominican government has laws in place and long-term development plans, there appears to be a dearth of convictions, arrests or other steps to stem the flow of human trade.
