Civil Defense launches disaster preparedness campaign

The Civil Defense has launched a national campaign to educate the public on how to act during and after a hurricane or an earthquake. Civil Defense director Major General Rafael de Luna Pichirilo says that the campaign seeks to instill a culture of prevention. The campaign was launched at the Fidel Ferrer High School in Santo Domingo yesterday, Wednesday, 13 May 2015. Civil Defense volunteers are spreading out to take the message to other schools, neighborhood associations, city councils, churches and sports and cultural clubs throughout the country.

During the press conference, De Luna Pichirilo pointed out that the Dominican Republic has more than 14 active seismic faults, which means that the country is under constant threat of an earthquake. He said that assessments have found that most of the population does not know what to do during a natural catastrophe.
