President Danilo Medina was in La Romana yesterday, Thursday 14 May 2015, and visited the so-called “Villa Panty,” the cluster of small businesses born from former free zone industries that manufactured lingerie.
President Medina visited the area and offered 5% annual interest rate to loans for the companies to expand their production. He visited some stores where the low-cost lingerie is sold.
The funds can be used to build factories and purchase materials from wholesalers. Medina designated Banca Solidaria director Maira Jimenez to work on the project.
The Villa Panty businesspeople are organized in the Associacion de Micro y Mediana Empresa Textil de La Romana (Asomimetro) and operate in Villa Catalina, popularly known as Villa Panty. The association of clothing manufacturers is made up of 110 small companies mainly assembling lingerie in 60 factories in the area. The small businesses reportedly employ around 600 people with a positive impact on the regional economy.
