Maximo Periche, the head of pediatric orthopedics at the Dr. Dario Contreras Trauma Hospital, the country’s leading orthopedics hospital, has gone public with his criticisms of the hospital’s billion-peso remodeling program. He said whoever led the renovations was either ignorant or had improvised because of the large amount of errors in the delivered project. He said that the Ministry of Public Works had banned him from speaking out, but that the everyday routine at the hospital is testimony to all the errors in design and construction. He said that the situation at the hospital is as bad as it was before the renovation and has now worsened because more patients are attending.
He said the extreme errors meant that the telecom company has been unable to install the system. He mentioned the example of the surgical area that needs to be sterile, but too many elements were not taken into account. He said the doctors’ offices do not have bathrooms or anywhere near for them to wash their hands. There is only one bathroom in the patients halls. The plaster rooms have no water or sinks. He commented that the cafeteria was located opposite the morgue and people have to eat with the “fragrance” from the corpses.
Periche Eusebio made the comments yesterday, Monday 17 May 2015 in a telephone interview on the Tu Derecho a Saber radio program on Rumba 98.5 FM.
