More on the case of Villaman Fadul

It has now emerged that Eduardo Miguel Villaman Fadul, nephew of the Minister of Interior and Police who ran over the foot of a Metropolitan Transport Authority (AMET) agent after being stopped for running a red light, was driving a vehicle that the Tax Agency had banned from the roads for failure to renew the driver’s permit tax in previous years. The vehicle had an official license plate.

In addition, acento.com.do reported that Villaman had been practically given a government-built apartment in the La Fuente neighborhood in Santiago on Av. Yapur Dumit for a bargain price of RD$210,000, of which RD$10,000, a credit of RD$35,400 was made and a 50% discount on the difference was granted on the instructions of former President Leonel Fernandez.

Villaman was released from any judicial charges after the Amet agents who he had attacked and abused decided not to press charges.

Media reports also suggest that at the time of the incident in Santiago city center, Villaman was wearing National Police attire, amid reports that he is not a policeman. It has also been reported that he is paid US$920 a month in wages from the Dominican consulate in New York, despite living in Santiago.

Alianza Pais New York representative Luis Mayobanex Rodriguez called for him to be fired from the consular post in New York.

Likewise, in an editorial today, Adriano Miguel Tejada, executive editor of Diario Libre, protests that no charges were brought against Villaman Fadul who violated several of the articles of the penal code that would have meant serving jail time, and that the state prosecutors have looked the other way.

“What authority will AMET agents have for issuing fines after this incident?” he asks. He says that Villaman should be fired from his post at the Dominican consulate in New York.

“If the excuses that he gave afterwards are accepted as valid for reducing his penalty, then he should be sent to clean toilets in the Rafey jail for a month given his predilection for the material deposited there,” writes Tejada.

He was referring to the explicit foul language Eduardo Miguel Villaman Fadul used to insult the two AMET traffic agents who stopped him for running a red light. Villaman argued that he should not be stopped because he was the nephew of Minister of Interior and Police Monchi Fadul.
