The president of the Dominican Society of Clinical Nutrition, Osvaldo Pena Tio, has said that 27% of Dominicans are obese and 32% are overweight.
In addition more than 10% of the country, around a million people, have diabetes and there are more and more heart attacks, strokes and cases of arthritis being reported in the country.
He said that the alarmingly high figures were due to increases in the sedentary life styles of many Dominicans and the lack of a balanced diet. Dr. Pena Tio urged the population to eat well, exercise and manage stress. He pointed out that a main cause of health problems associated with weight gain is that many Dominicans do not watch what they eat.
