DNCD official jailed in the US

A former top official of the Dominican Republic’s main drug agency was sentenced on Tuesday, 23 June 2015, to four years in a United States prison, having pled guilty to conspiring with drug traffickers to transport cocaine into the United States.

Francisco Hiraldo Guerrero, who was once Chief of Operations for the National Drug Control Agency (DNCD), was also ordered by a US District Judge in Manhattan to forfeit more than US$1 million.

The judge said that the authorities received what he called “significant cooperation” from Hiraldo Guerrero and that he would receive credit for the time spent in US custody since his extradition in April 2013. The amount and nature of the cooperation was not disclosed.

At his hearing in July 2014, Hiraldo Guerrero admitted that he provided information to two groups of drug dealers in the Dominican Republic to help them to import large amounts of cocaine from 1999 to 2010. For this service he received US$1 million in bribes.
