The Dominican government answered late yesterday the Organization of American States (OAS) with regard to their offer to “mediate” in order to resolve the crisis with Haiti. Dominican Foreign Minister, Andres Navarro commented that no mediation is necessary since “there is no conflict which merits such mediation.”
“The Dominican Republic reaffirms that it has not requested nor does it require the mediation by the Secretary General of the OAS, because in the first place, there does not exist at the present time a conflict between both countries which merits such a thing,” said the Foreign Minister during a press conference at the Presidential Palace. Navarro also said that there already exist mechanisms for bilateral talks with Haiti, which could be reestablished, he said, “as soon as the Haitian government ends its policy of discrediting the Dominican Republic, which appears to me as simply a pretext for evading its responsibility to serve the Haitian population.”
