Canine unit to control Santo Domingo Metro

Trained dogs have been incorporated into the security at the Santo Domingo Metro. The decision was announced in response to an incident in which an individual detonated an explosive in the subway system on 27 October 2014 that caused serious burns to Francis Gonzalez and other subway car passengers.

Two specially trained dogs in drugs and explosives are now patrolling Metro stations and subway cars.

The Metro Office (Opret) has not made an announcement of the incorporation of the dogs to the security service (Cesmet) of the Metro. A Cesmet agent said that the dogs spend less than 10 minutes at each station.

An estimated 230,000 persons use the metro each day, as reported in El Caribe.
