Administrative Minister of the Presidency Jose Ramon Peralta has asked to see evidence of the alleged government subsidy for vehicles for political patronage, while Central Electoral Board (JCE) inspectors say they will be investigating the allegations.
At the same time, social media and radio talk shows have been abuzz with videos and reports on who has been getting the vehicles through the low-cost program.
A recent video posted on You Tube shows a press conference where a leading PLD member in Samana gives thanks for the support received from President Danilo Medina to benefit party members. Named as Benjamin Alvarez Nao (alias La Burrita), he thanks the President for extending the project to people who otherwise would not have been able to receive a free car through a CNTU car union program, one of the schemes mentioned for the distribution of the low cost Hyundai imports. Alvarez said that in his understanding, the beneficiaries were pre-selected. The meeting took place at his house in Las Terrenas about a month ago. Alvarez is seeking the PLD nomination as candidate for mayor of Las Terrenas in the 2016 municipal election.
Meanwhile, PLD deputy Jose Luis Cosme warned citizens against being scammed by the deal that offers payments of RD$3,500 a month for five years for a vehicle that is reportedly worth RD$700,000.
A shipment of 10,000 vehicles is reported to have arrived from South Korea. The Hyundai representative in the country, Magna Motors, says it did not import of the cars, which are reported to be 2010-2015 models.
