Martha Heredia granted part-time release

Santiago judge Ruben Dario de la Cruz Uceta has granted “part-time” jail time to Martha Heredia, who was sentenced to seven years in jail for trafficking in heroin in 2014. The part-time arrangement is established in Law 2-24 on the Jail Regime. The arrangement will allow her to leave the Rafey Correction and Rehabilitation Center on Thursdays and Fridays from 7:30am in the morning and sleep at home. On Saturdays, she will be allowed to go to Universidad Abierta para Adultos (UAPA) to study languages returning to the jail by 6pm.

She also will be allowed to work at the Colon, Ventura y Asociados company.

The judge also established that once she has served half of the sentence on 14 August 2016 she would be allowed to apply for conditional release.

Upon hearing the decision, Heredia burst into tears of joy, as reported in El Nacional.

Martha Heredia shot to fame after winning the Latin American Idol reality TV show in 2009.
