
The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO) have issued an alert given the recent detection of Mayaro fever virus. The warning was issued on 1 May 2019, and says that the virus has been detected in areas where it had not occurred previously. The virus is known to circulate in tropical South America.
Previous outbreaks in the Americas have been in rural areas, although it is thought it can also be transmitted in urban areas as well.
Mayaro virus is a mosquito-borne virus that is very similar to Dengue and Chikungunya. It leads to fever, headache and joint pain and lasts for three to five days.
