Alianza Pais and Opción Democrática political parties merge

Minou Tavarez Mirabal of Opción Democrática announced her decision to participate in the 2020 general election under the Alianza País of politician Guillermo Moreno. The two parties held an extraordinary national convention to make official the decision of the party leaders.

Moreno and Tavárez Mirabal announced they are joining forces as “a proactive reaction to the need for a political body with a vocation for power that is not associated with the prevailing system of corruption and impunity; that seeks to express the willingness present in a large part of the people to promote the construction of an alternative proposal to overcome the backward policy that characterizes the traditional parties.”

Moreno said that in compliance with the Organic Law of the Electoral System and the Law of Political Parties, in the coming days they will be depositing the merger act with the Central Electoral Board (JCE).

Alliances are crucial for small parties now that electoral law requires a party to receive at least 1% of the municipal and congressional vote to keep party status.
