Consensus for selection of electoral prosecutor

The ruling Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) and the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) have given the green light to the choosing of either 41-year old Jonathan Baró or 72-year old Gisela Cueto for electoral prosecutor. The prosecutor would be named by the Public Ministry Council in time for the municipal election this Sunday, 15 March 2020.

The agreement between the two leading political parties was reached during the five-day political dialogue sponsored by the Social and Economic Council (CES) talks at the Pontifical Catholic University Madre y Maestra. There is a widespread opposition to the Attorney General unilaterally naming the electoral prosecutor.

Jonathan Baró Gutiérrez is a Court of Appeals prosecutor, head of the San Cristóbal Regional Attorney’s Office. He has been with the Public Prosecutor’s Office for 13 years and is a career prosecutor.

Gisela Altagracia Cueto González, is also an assistant prosecutor. She is the director of Extraditions and International Affairs of the Attorney General Office.

The proposal of the two eligible prosecutors is one of several measures the CES commission presented to the plenary of the Central Electoral Board (JCE) on Wednesday, 11 March 2020. The CES met for five days in which mainly the two leading political parties focused on issues they wanted to be resolved regarding the municipal and general elections.
