Surrealist artist Iván Tovar passes away in France

Many times regarded as the Dominican Salvador Dalí, master artist Ivan Tovar died on 13 April 2020 in Santo Domingo. He was 78. Culture Minister Eduardo Selman expressed his sorrow: “An illustrious Dominican has died, probably our most internationally-renowned artist.”

Tovar had been awarded the National Visual Arts Award in 2018. Born in San Francisco de Macorís, in 1963 he relocated to Paris, France, where he lived for more than 20 years. He is regarded as the most outstanding Dominican surrealist artist.

His wife, actress María Castillo said that Tovar did not die of coronavirus. She did explain that he lived in Santiago de Compostela, Spain and had returned to the country about a month ago to receive health care near his family, as reported in Listín Diario.
