Diario Libre explains that the eight Italians that evaded Interpol for several years used fake identities and frequently changed their place of residence in the DR. The group was sent back to Italy on 2 June 2020. Diario Libre explains that it was not an easy task for the Dominican Interpol and Italian investigative agencies to track the mobsters down. Some were able to live here for around 13 years, engaging in different types of business.
According to information revealed by Interpol’s director in the country, Dennis Díaz, “Operation Open World” began in the country in September 2019 when they were alerted by Italian allies that this group of subjects were residing in different parts of the island.
Those arrested are 55-year old Salvatore Vittorio, 64-year old Sergio Cerioni, 67-year old Oliviero Zilio, 43-year old Luca Finocchiaro, 50-year old Luigi Capretto, 52-year old Salvatore Galluccio, 52 years old, 63 year old Alessandro Levi, and 57-year old Teresa Amante. They reportedly were living in the Dominican Republic for many years, having settled here in their “retirement.” Neither the local Police nor Interpol in the Dominican Republic have yet to share with the press any information on the operation.
Diario Libre speculates that the convictions of the eight are at most 14 years, and given the roots many of these already have in the country, they could return.
