According to Coronavirus Bulletin #118 of the Ministry of Public Health’s Department of Epidemiology, the Dominican Republic has 47,671 confirmed cases, including 1,366 new cases. The number of PCR tests reported for the bulletin is 4,035.
The number of recorded cases is dependent on the availability of PCR tests that continues to be very scarce, especially in the provinces where test waiting lists are long. Even the wealthy, all around the country people have to get on long waiting lists to get tested. Every day, long lines queue up at the Laboratorio Nacional Dr. Defilló for a shot at a free PCR test.
The tally of deaths is now 929, including 19 new registered deaths. The daily average number of deaths for the past 14 days is 12.5.
As of Bulletin #118, 3,495 patients are hospitalized. Of these, 246 patients are in intensive care units. Covid-19 hospitalization capacity is stretched, and the government says more units will be available at public hospitals to meet the new demand.
The fatality rate, the number of reported deaths per number of confirmed cases, continues to decline with the increase in testing. It is now at 1.95% per million inhabitants. The positivity rate over the past four weeks continues to rise and is now at 26.90%, considered high. A high positivity rate means many may be spreading the disease without knowing it. World experts advocate opening the economy when the positivity rate is at 5%.

The average testing over the past 14 days is 3,169 PCR tests. The statistical reports do not include rapid response blood antibody tests or patients diagnosed with tomography or other means. The Dominican Republic has a population of more than 10 million people.
As of Tuesday, 14 July 2020 at 4pm, the deadline for Bulletin #118, the most confirmed cases were located in urban areas where most of the tests are carried out. Santo Domingo province (12,910) and the National District (13,116) have 56.2% of cases or 26,026 of 46,305 confirmed cases nationwide. Santiago (3,964), San Cristobal (2,336), La Vega (1,706), La Altagracia (1,407), La Romana (1,147), Duarte (1,081), Espaillat (988), Azua (898), Puerto Plata (726), Barahona (676) and Sánchez Ramírez (537), San Pedro de Macoris (518) and Monseñor Nouel (505) are the other provinces that have 500 or more accumulated cases, making up 89% of the confirmed cases nationwide.
The most new cases or recently allocated cases are reported for the 14 July update deadline are: the National District (310), Santo Domingo province (184), Santiago (271), Duarte (29), Santiago Rodriguez (24), San Pedro de Macoris (19) and Espaillat (14). The Ministry of Public Health reports 10 or less confirmed cases in 20 other provinces.
Haiti reports 6,831 confirmed cases and 143 deaths, as of 13 July 2020.
In the Americas, the Dominican Republic is now ranked 12th in confirmed cases after the United States, Brazil, Peru, Canada, Mexico, Chile, Ecuador, Colombia, Argentina, Panama and Bolivia.
