
Emeritus King of Spain, Juan Carlos I is in the Dominican Republic. Spanish media say that he will be staying in Casa de Campo in La Romana. The new avenue of the entrance to the tourism and residential community was named Avenida Juan Carlos I to honor the Spanish king. The retired king has close ties with the owner of the complex.
El Pais of Spain reports that the former monarch had told his son, Felipe VI of his “well-considered decision” to leave Spain after Swiss and Spanish prosecutors opened an investigation into allegations of financial irregularities. Juan Carlos I had lived for the last 58 years at the Zarzuela Palace in Madrid. El Pais reports the decision comes after Swiss and Spanish prosecutors opened an investigation into bank accounts allegedly held by Juan Carlos in tax havens.
Juan Carlos’ lawyer has said that although his client will no longer be in Spain, he will still be available to help the public prosecutor with its investigation in any way possible.
According to ABC, Juan Carlos I flew from Portugal and landed at Las Americas International Airport.
