Roberto Alvarez to UN Security Council: Forget inertia and evasion in the case of the Haiti

Speaking at a session of the Security Council of the United Nations, Foreign Minister Roberto Alvarez called for international support to help Haiti move beyond its present government, economic and health crisis.

Alvarez says the worsening of the critical situation in Haiti is affecting the Dominican Republic. He said that while the Dominican Republic will continue to closely collaborate with Haiti, the world cannot see in the country the solution to Haiti’s problems.

Alvarez expressed concern for Haiti’s difficult humanitarian situation that is now worsened by social and political tension. Legislative elections have been delayed worsening the present social, economic and sanitary and political crisis in Haiti.

Violence is on the rise. Just recently the father of the director of the Police was killed.

Foreign Minister Alvarez called for the United Nations to keep open the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH) and that this office be funded adequately. He said Haiti urgently needs resources to invest in infrastructure and to create conditions for creating jobs.

He said Haitian the grave health, defense, environmental issues in Haiti require bilateral coordination. But that given the present political crisis in Haiti, that coordination depends on the co-participation of multilateral and international community so this coordination can happen and be effective.

“The BINUH must facilitate a comprehensive political pact in Haiti to ensure the holding of legislative elections, which is the most urgent task,” he said.

“Inertia or evasion cannot be viable policies in the case of Haiti,” he said.
