The Ministry of Public Health’s Epidemiology Department Coronavirus Bulletin #220 reports 509 new PCR confirmed cases.
4,337 first PCR tests were carried out in time for the deadline of Bulletin #220. The previous 14-day average is 3,454 tests.
The 24-hour positivity rate is at 11.74% and the 4-week positivity rate continues to decline and is at 12.12%, a new low. The Ministry of Public Health reports active cases are maintaining a steady downward trend and as of Saturday, 24 October 2020 were at 19,653 active cases.
Nevertheless, the country continues under the declaration of a National State of Emergency at least through 1 December 2020. The Ministry of Public Health is concerned that home and friends’ gatherings and increased mobility can lead to the same virus flare-ups that have affected other countries worldwide, mainly due to pandemic fatigue. There continue to be sporadic spikes in Greater Santo Domingo and the provinces. This situation is why the Ministry of Public Health continues to recommend keeping curfew and preventive measures. The curfew is in effect through 11 November 2020, from 9pm to 5am Monday to Friday, and 7pm to 5am on Saturdays and Sundays.
As per Bulletin #220, with the deadline of 24 October 2020, the Ministry of Public Health has registered 124,527 confirmed cases since the first case on 1 March 2020. Partial curfew has been in place since 18 March 2020.
The number of deaths is 2,223, including three deaths recorded and none in the past 24 hours.
Local physicians in public and private systems now have better treatment protocols to deal with the sickness, resulting in fewer patients requiring hospitalization. In a population of more than 10 million, the fatality rate is 1.80% over the past four weeks. The fatality rate per 1M inhabitants is 212.76. The Ministry of Public Health reports that the average 1M inhabitants’ fatality rate for the Americas is 593.
Worldometer lists the 1M deaths per inhabitant rate for the Dominican Republic at 204. According to the 1M deaths statistics, people are less likely to die of Covid-19 in the Dominican Republic than in Spain at 743, Brazil at 737, the United States at 694, the United Kingdom at 660, Italy 618, Argentina 631, Colombia 588, France 530 and Canada 263, all major source markets for Dominican tourism.
The Ministry of Public Health report #220 indicates that the occupancy of hospital beds continues to decline. 19% of Covid-19 hospital beds are occupied (644 of 3,348 total available). 34% of the intensive care units for Covid-19 are taken (178 of 522 beds). The ICU occupancy rate has climbed above 30% for the first time in months.

The Ministry indicates that the newest allocated cases (more than 9) reported for the Saturday, 24 October update deadline are: National District (78), Santo Domingo (56), Santiago (45), Samaná (41), Baoruco (39), Puerto Plata (37), Dajabón (26), San Juan de la Maguana (25), Montecristi (24), Monseñor Nouel (22), La Romana (21), San Cristóbal (21), Duarte (19) and La Vega (15).
Haiti reports 9,015 confirmed cases and 231 deaths, for the 24 October 2020 deadline.
In the Americas, the Dominican Republic is now ranked 12th in confirmed cases after the United States, Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Canada, Ecuador, Bolivia and Panama.
